home makeover: kitchen breakfast nook

i know i have not shared any details of our home renovation.  the biggest reason is because it's still undergoing many, many changes!  sometimes i feel like this reno is NEVER going to end.  it just goes on and on, my friend...

okay, so anyway, one of the biggest things i wanted when we moved into our new home was a window seat.  i didn't really care where it was, i just wanted one.  it worked out perfectly, because the eat-in kitchen had a beautiful window that would be perfect for a window seat with a table that could push up against it.  the only thing i had wanted more than a window seat was a kitchen breakfast nook with a window seat!  SCORE!

so here is what it looked like when we first laid eyes on it...

good thing i married a visionary {ryhmes with missionary...kind of ironic}...i could NOT see the potential in this area...well, this HOME...but he could.  and he could see what it would be today.  so glad he could and that i followed his lead!  so we got to work and painted the kitchen...

and yes, i helped paint, too, but i had to take pictures!  the funny thing {drew would disagree that this is funny} is that i picked out a golden color for the kitchen that i thought i would love, and as soon as it was painted {like, the second he brushed the last stroke}, i let him know that that was NOT the color that we were going to keep the kitchen.  and i'm so glad he followed my lead on that one...

so once the painting was done, jesse {amy's husband} came out and built an amazing window seat.  the guy is really a professional.  i cannot even tell you how much i love that seat!  it has two benches that can raise to put all kinds of stuff in {i think i'm going to use it for my tons of fabric that i have been given by a sweet lady i know}, and it is just totally legit.  after he had completed the seat, i got to work sewing the curtains.  i knew immediately that this would be something that i would try, because i had something specific in mind {i wanted long curtains, not a valance, but it still had to be short enough to not get in the way of the seat}, and i really wanted to pick out the patterns and colors of the curtains and the window seat cushion so that they would coordinate well.  i got my fabric at hobby lobby...

it took me about five days to sew my curtains, mainly because three or four of those days i could only put in about two hours.  it took me forever just to pin off all of my fabric.  that's the part of sewing that i hate the most {but all of the ironing is a very, very close second}!  but i was really proud of the way they turned out, and was really glad that i attempted this big job.  i was also SUPER excited about how my cushions turned out.  my dad just took some foam that i bought from hobby lobby and covered it with my fabric and then stapled it all the way around.  he did a fantastic job, just like he always does.

so here is my final product, my brand new breakfast nook with window seat {and please ignore the ugly light above my table...it just takes time...and money...to do a reno...we will eventually replace that}...

i know this next picture is really bad quality {i took it with my iphone}, but the girls are as stoked about our new window seat as i am!  they are loving it, and i'm so glad that they are...

love my new home and my new window seat!
happy tuesday :-)

  1. WOAH! super impressed at the mad sewing skills here. I love this table too! It looks really good against the colors of the material. Good job lady!

  2. Thanks, Bethany...they're certainly not perfect! Yeah I forgot to mention that the table is an old oak table that belonged to mom & dad, and I just asked dad to stain it black. I thought it ended up looking good with the curtains and the countertops too. So one small corner of my home is done... ;)
