just call me soul surfer.

you are going to look at me in a totally different way after you read this post.  really, you are going to look at me with UTTER AMAZEMENT at my innate abilities...with UTTER ENVY that i am so incredibly athletic...with UTTER RESPECT that i am able to catch on to new things so quickly.  let me tell you about something that went down while we were at Fort Walton...
tj brought his skim board to the beach with him.  and, of course, drew was immediately intrigued and they had to try it...it did not go down well for any of them...literally.  here are a few pics for your entertainment:
i love all the kids gathered around their "hero"...if only it would have stayed that way.  instead...

yikes.  pretty sure that hurt more than just the pride.  but you think that was bad?  check out drew's attempt...
he looked so confident waiting on just the right wave...
if i could have seen what was about to happen, i would have yelled, "abort!  abort!"  but, alas, i couldn't foresee this...

yeah, he pretty much ate sand.
 so i guess the guys felt like they had not had enough humiliation, because the very next day they decided to rent a surf board.  i am pleased to report that they had a much better experience with that {well, at least drew did...sorry, tj, we still love you no matter your surfing abilities ;)}

here are a few pics from that hoo-rah:

dontcha love that picture?  i mean, they really look like legit surfers.  until you check out these pictures...
pretty sure they're talking technique and game plan here.  too bad it didn't help...
now, let me just say here, we had some pretty legit waves this day...i mean, i have never been in the ocean when the waves were quite as big or strong...which was perfect if you're going to try to surf, but extremely scary...so with that being said, tj took on the waves first...

ru-roh.  okay, cut him some slack.  no lie, this is A LOT harder than it looks...
drew took on the waves next...
i took this picture just to show how crazy the waves were...they are way over his head!!  you can't even see that he is wading out with the surf board...the waves were high!

it only took him a few times, and can you believe it...

...HE GOT IT!  it really was cool...and inspiring.  so you may be wondering how you can respect ME from the pictures of DREW surfing?  well, i was so inspired that i thought i would give it a try.  here is how THAT went down...

here drew is telling me exactly what to do once i catch a half-way decent wave...about this time all i was thinking about was the REAL soul surfer and the crazy waves and sharks and undertows.  how could i possibly think about lifting up on the board when the wave begins to crest?  what does that even mean?!  anyway, despite all my fears, i was able to sit up on my board, and what happened next was nothing short of miraculous...

OH YES, THAT'S ME!...I GOT UP FOR LIKE 0.2 SECONDS!!!  and then this happened...

yes, i'll admit it...that's me, too :)  it was a lot of fun trying, though...if you've never been surfing, i was so surprised at how hard it was to just get the board turned in the right direction, not to mention then getting on top of it, watching for a good wave, timing getting up on the board...getting up on the board...it was pretty hard!  but yeah, i was pretty excited about getting up on it.

meanwhile, i was having mini-heart attacks every five seconds because kenzie was delving out into deeper and deeper water.  she loved the hard waves, and i was about to stroke out trying to take pictures of the guys and watch her at the same time...just a few pictures of her having a little fun...
just begging the waves to come closer...

the girl was fearless!!  the waves would take her under and she'd just come right up laughing and wanting more.  crazy!

well, i think that's enough for one day...if you want to see all of our surfing and skim board fun, check out my entire album HERE.

soul surfer is now signing off.
